The Stieff Company, Silversmiths & Pewterers Baltimore MD 1892-1999

Charles Clinton Stieff (rhymes with Beef) created The Sterling Silver Manufacturing Company in 1892 after the failure of The Klank Mfg. Company. Klank was a Baltimore Silversmith, who had the financial backing of Mr. Stieff. With Stieff in control, the company began to grow in earnest. The name was later changed to THE BALTIMORE STERLING SILVER COMPANY, and again in 1904 he changed the name to THE STIEFF COMPANY. Early operations were at Cider Alley in Baltimore, later on German Street which was changed to Redwood Street during World War I. Long time showrooms were located at 17 N.|Liberty Street in Baltimore. (a.k.a. 17 McLane Place for a few years after the Great Baltimore Fire) The Stieff Company cut out the middle man by manufacturing their own silver and retailing it in the early years in their own stores and by mail order. This allowed them to offer a high quality product at value pricing.
